Baragatan Palawan Festival set in June

Once a year, the province of Palawan, the Philippines’ last ecological frontier, celebrates its biggest festival, Baragatan sa Palawan, from June 1 to 30, 2010. Baragatan which is derived from the Cuyonon word, bagat, which means “to meet,” is a gathering of people, culture, traditions and resources celebrating the beauty and bounty of the province. It is a grand celebration where one can experience Palawan under one roof, so to speak.

It is a festival of Palawan’s natural and cultural heritage showcasing the beauty and bounty of the province in its people, agricultural crops, arts and crafts, tourism destinations, and environment. People from all walks of life including expatriates who have made Palawan their home, tourists and visitors are part of the Baragatan sa Palawan.

Puerto Princesa Palawan Girds for Tree Planting Feast

For 19 years now, the Pista has been successfully bringing thousands upon thousands of people to the mountains of Irawan to plant trees to prevent its soils from eroding. Irawan is a watershed area that serves as major source potable water of the city.

Mayor Edward S. Hagedorn and the city government expect more than 50,000 people to participate in this year’s Puerto Princesa Palawan Pista to plant more than a hundred thousand fast growing and fruit bearing trees on a 15-hectare site that’s now being readied by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO).

Estrella Falls Palawan

estrella-falls-001
Estrella Falls-  Palawan are a 15 minute drive from the south road near Nara. It’s probably not worth a special trip down here from Puerto Princessa but its a nice picnic spot for those that live in the area. Troops of monkeys come down on the weekends to get handouts from the local kids.

You can swim in the pools but there is a caretaker there to remind people not to swim to close to the falls. Someone actually got disorientated in the current and drowned there. It’s hard to believe that that happened in a falls this small but maybe the current is tricky.

Experience paradise at El Nido

Manila Bulletin
Bursting with life and rich with nature’s offspring, the El Nido Resorts in Palawan is truly an extraordinary and stunning place to host one’s ideal gateway trip. This eutopic side of the sea is a landscape forever etched in the mind with enchanting visions of white sand beaches, stately limestone cliffs, tranquil lagoons, and vibrant reefs.

El Nido Resorts highlights lush sceneries, bounteous resources, and complete facilities and recreations for guests to explore. Adventurers can choose from El Nido’s wide selection of activities that range from soft adventure sports such as snorkeling, diving, or kayaking in its activity sites that are just 10 to 30 minutes away by boat. For naturally sentimental and private types, one can simply go sunset cruising, have picnic at a secluded island or learn to weave a hat from coconut leaves.

Cruising in San Carlos: Ecotourism in Palawan

IMAGINE sitting comfortably on a wide boat platform – actually a floor or ‘hut’ built over two bancas, and being pulled by a third – shaded and comfortable, and drinking coffee and chatting with eight or nine friends as you move slowly down the beautiful Bacungan River, through the mangroves, in almost pristine wilderness. Suddenly the boat rounds a curve and the river opens up into Honda Bay! The boat moves out into the bay, and comes to rest at Pambato Reef, that most wonderful new snorkeling site, developed and protected (like the river cruise) by the community involved – ecotourism at its best.

Then imagine you do a little swimming and snorkeling, along with whoever else is so inclined (in this case only my friend Jack Finlay would join me.) Then you get out of the water and back into the boat, refreshed and hungry and just in time to sit down to a lovely lunch, prepared by some of the women and community leaders of San Carlos (who are also on board.) Chicken tinola, grilled samaral, sautéed shrimp, maja blanco (in this case prepared by my friend Elsie Castrence). There is a small rondalla on board – two middle aged men from the community – and they play and sing old songs and are absolutely delighted that this boatload of seniors, many of whom are FilAms, join in the singing. Leron Leron Sinta, Bahay Kubo, Dahil Sa Iyo – even Ploning.

Firefly Watching in Iwahig River, Puerto Princesa

Iwahig River - 2
You’d probably think that after the city tour in Palawan, you’ll just have dinner and grab a couple of beers at Kinabuchs. You may want to rethink your itinerary and experience firefly watching. In firefly watching you will cruise the Iwahig river for an hour and you will be mesmerized by the beauty of the fireflies. Iwahig river is located at Highway km. 20 Barangay Iwahig Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.
