Estrella Falls Palawan

Estrella Falls-  Palawan are a 15 minute drive from the south road near Nara. It’s probably not worth a special trip down here from Puerto Princessa but its a nice picnic spot for those that live in the area. Troops of monkeys come down on the weekends to get handouts from the local kids.

You can swim in the pools but there is a caretaker there to remind people not to swim to close to the falls. Someone actually got disorientated in the current and drowned there. It’s hard to believe that that happened in a falls this small but maybe the current is tricky.

Southern Palawan is not noted for the spectacular scenery that you find in the north but is is peaceful in a less dramatic way. The traffic going south has increased substantially over the past few years because of the Rio Tinto mining operation near Rio Tuba.

The road going to Rio Tuba will probably be completely surfaced within the next two years making it an easy run – maybe 5 – 6 hours from Puerto Princessa. Most tourists short on time will opt to go north from the capitol instead.

The boom town atmosphere you can experience in Rio Tuba is kind of energizing in a way but it’s not set up with tourist facilities yet. There is a 9 hole golf course near the mine and a beautiful airstrip but these are both used primarily by mining execs.

We stopped for pizza on the way home.
