Brief History

El Nido is formerly known as Bacuit the municipality situated in the northernmost tip of Palawan. It covers 465.1 square kilometers with 45 wonderful and unique islands.

The significance of these islands is not new to the world. Thousands of years ago Bacuit Bay has frequent visitors. Merchant from nearby countries especially Chinese gathers the famous “Bird Nest” made-up from saliva of swiftlet birds the main ingredient for making herbal soups believe so have strong healing capability. The term “El Nido” comes from the Spanish word “Nido” means nest. It was in 1954 that the name El Nido replaced Bacuit.

Rise to the World of Tourism

Because Palawan is undeveloped and remote it was only in 1979 that this municipality was discovered for tourism as a dive site. As the story goes, “a tune line disabled a dive boat's propeller in the middle of the night forcing it to drop anchor in an inlet. The following morning, the divers woke up to a an amazing scenery of skyscraping dark cliffs, thick green forest, white sand beaches, sparkling water and rising above it, a series of magnificently sculpted jade islands.” From that moment El Nido became a priority list when it comes to tourist destination and a sure favorite among divers and nature lovers.
