Tabon Caves

The Tabon Caves are a set of caves in Lipuun Point, north of Quezon municipality, three and a half hours to the south western part of the province of Palawan on Palawan Island, Philippines. The caves are named after the Tabon Scrubfowl.

With around 200 caves known to exist here, 29 have been explored while only  two are open to public. The remains of the Tabon Man, approximately 22,000-24,000 years old, were discovered in the caves by Dr. Robert B. Fox and his team from the National Museum of the Philippines in 1962. The team also found burial jars, earthenware, jade ornaments and other jewelry, stone tools, animal bones, and human fossils dating back to 47,000 years ago.

Because of its importance to Philippine history and heritage, the site was declared a Museum Reservation Site by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 996 in 1972 by the Philippine Government. The Tabon cave complex is currently being maintained and managed by the National Museum.
